Another excellent analysis, David. Spoutible looked promising but Threads, being connected to Instagram and Facebook, has an incredible advantage. I wonder if this dooms the pending BlueSky to third-tier status, like Spoutible is now. Long-term, seeing how Elon's threatened lawsuit against Threads and - most importantly - if Threads repeats Facebook's mistakes of 2016 in the 2024 election will determine: how well it's accepted; if Spoutible, Mastodon and BlueSky survive; and if Twitter truly is on its way to becoming a has-been like tumblr and MySpace.

Thanks, Rob! Yeah, Bluesky has the same problem all the rest have. I gotta work to find people I know on Bluesky. I don't know that the fragmentation we're seeing is necessarily a bad thing but I do think we lose a lot if we don't have an adequate replacement for what Twitter used to be, the closest thing approximating a global town square.
